Meet our junior - Foivos

Hey You! I am Foivos and I have a question for you.

Do you want to develop yourself as an allround data engineer within a year? Then the Xomnia junior data engineering development program is the best decision you can make to kick-start your career. Why? In this blog, I will tell you, so keep on reading.

I work within the ProRail DataLab as a junior data engineer, where our goal is to predict train delays caused by infrastructure malfunctions, trespassers, and several other factors. The team develops predictive data science models that we gradually take in production on our Hadoop cluster, working in an agile, scrum-based manner.

One of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to work with innovative technologies and tools of the Hadoop  ecosystem such as Nifi, Hive, Spark and others that are essential components of our data science workflow at Prorail. The technical skills and practical experience you gain can be an enormous boost for your career. Besides the technical part, there is a need for constant communication with stakeholders from the business but also IT functions within the organization. This helps us to support business objectives in the best possible way but also to integrate novel big data technologies into the traditional ICT infrastructure and processes.

The support you have from experienced colleagues from both Xomnia and in my case ProRail is exceptional, as everyone is very accessible and you can constantly ask questions in case you reach a dead end to keep things moving. Plus, in contrast with most  other traineeships, there is a real training day every Friday at Xomnia HQ in Amsterdam covering the complete spectrum of big data and data science concepts, technologies and tools.

And of course there is the Xomnia factor, a great company full of young people that share the same interests and passion, with a hammock in the office and a self-driving boat always available for a ride in the canals of Amsterdam!

All the best,

Foivos
Junior data engineer at ProRail.
