Data challenge: rubbish trucks, airline lounges & flasks on the fly

The goal: To share what you’re working on with your colleagues on a Friday afternoon. That’s exactly what our data scientists and data engineers were tasked with. They didn’t disappoint. We call this information exchange a data market.

Highlights included Garbage in garbage out, a presentation about a municipality car they trained with a camera to detect what kind of rubbish was outside a building. The car could tell whether something was recycling, an old fridge or general waste, so that the municipality could determine which truck to send out  to collect it.

We loved the presentation about making the happy few happier. This was about predicting the number of visitors to the lounges at Schiphol. This way they could improve the planning of catering and hiring of temporary labor. Plus, later on when the lounge is starting to get more full, they don’t have to turn away a customer with status, because they have enough staff at work to serve their customers.

The presentation about flask on the fly where our data scientist created a web app for an airline’s business specialists was great. It helped the airline add business data to new flight routes in the upcoming season. The web app used dynamic web forms that could easily be adjusted to the needs of the users which replaced an old software they were running locally.
