We proudly launch the Xomnia Datathon 2016 - Aftermovie!
During the Datathon, on Friday 25th of March, 25 students from 5 different study associations worked on the case “Sustainable Fishing” for 24 hours straight. With the available data they were challenged to find new insights or build models that can help understanding the current situation and support policy making.
Some important aspects of data science in general were encountered: The importance of available, valuable data; looking for a clear question that can be answered; gaining domain knowledge.
Once again one of the biggest problems came forward: Lots of fragmented, unverified data and, at the same time, a lack of data. Nevertheless, all teams managed to link multiple data sets and to show a proof of concept of how the data could be used.
At the end of the Saturday all teams presented their ideas, after following a pitch workshop to get some tips and tricks how such a presentation should be done. The jury decided that the model entitled with “Data-Driven Approach to Select Maritime Protected Areas" made by Cognac, Nijmegen, was the winning idea.
